The Brief vs. The Narrative
The brief we received was a classic industrial success story: PTSC M&C is Vietnam’s leading EPCIC contractor, delivering two massive wellhead platforms for Qatar’s Al Shaheen oil field, with Bureau Veritas Vietnam ensuring safety and quality.
But as filmmakers, we knew the real story was in the result. They were working against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic. Supply chains were fractured, yet the deadlines were immovable. What carried this massive project wasn’t just steel and engineering; it was co-working and the tight local synergy between PTSC M&C and Bureau Veritas. The core narrative was a point of national pride: a local Vietnamese contractor and workforce executing a world-class offshore project on their own. Bureau Veritas tapped 9G Pictures to translate that technical triumph into a cinematic story.
The Reality of Production: 5 Months of Pre-Prod, 2 Days on Set & 4 months of Post-Prod.
This is the trap many production houses fall into: underestimating the pipeline. We had a two-days shooting window, but getting to day one took five months of intense pre-production.
The script didn’t just need a green light; it had to survive a complex approval matrix involving PTSC M&C leadership, Bureau Veritas Vietnam, and final sign-off from BV South East Asia in Singapore. We were scheduling around C-suite calendars across multiple time zones. We pitched, waited, revised, and reported back. By the time we finally called “action” on set, every camera angle, every interview question, and every safety clearance was completely locked. On a shoot like this, you don’t improvise on location; you execute the plan.
Shooting on a Live Heavy-Industrial Set
When you shoot inside PTSC M&C’s fabrication yard in Vũng Tàu, the location dictates the production design, not the director. This was an active heavy-construction site.
Equipment footprint had to be minimal. Safety protocols were absolute: inductions, hot-work permits, full PPE. If a crane needed to move or welding sparked up, production paused. Our strategy? Go in lean and mean. We deployed a compact, highly senior crew where every member could wear multiple hats, bringing only gear that had pre-cleared security. We didn’t accept this as a limitation—we embraced it as our aesthetic. It was the only way to capture the raw, authentic energy of the yard without slowing down their operations.
Directing the C-Suite: One Take, One Window
Interviews were conducted with high-level executives from both companies in English and Vietnamese. We had exactly one brief window with each subject.
There were no pickup days or reshoots. Questions were pre-approved and bilingual, meaning zero time was wasted on set translating intent. We shot entirely for the edit, ensuring we had enough coverage, cutaways, and B-roll to build a seamless narrative and keep ourselves safe in post-production.
Keeping Post-Production In-House
The entire post-pipeline—offline and online edit, color grading, sound mix, motion graphics, and bilingual subtitling—was handled 100% in-house by 9G Pictures.
On a corporate doc with a multi-national feedback loop, keeping post under one roof is survival. The review process shaped the final cut as much as the edit itself: language variants, platform-specific cutdowns, technical terminology checks, and strict BV brand compliance. Every timeline export was meticulously tracked against client notes. Managing this isn’t just a creative skill; it’s a hardcore operational one, and it’s exactly why the film got approved.

But for us as a boutique production house, the real win is the ongoing relationship. We proved that a lean, local Vietnamese crew could clear a massive international corporate approval chain, shoot safely inside a state-level industrial site, and deliver a world-class film.
